This practical guide focuses on one problem: producing usable fresh water from seawater and other saline sources when a normal water supply is unavailable.
Instead of presenting one perfect device, the book explains 20 different desalination systems, from extremely simple improvised setups to more advanced engineering solutions. You will also learn how to choose between passive solar systems and active heating, improve condensation instead of simply adding more heat, prevent cross-contamination between the saline and clean sides of a system, manage concentrated brine, avoid dangerous pressure buildup, and measure actual output instead of relying on theoretical estimates.
Some designs require little more than sunlight, plastic sheeting, and a container. Others use metal tubing, heat exchangers, controlled airflow, or specialized membranes. The goal is to understand enough of the engineering to choose the method that fits the resources, weather, time, and equipment actually available.
