In 1889, the remains of twenty-four-year-old Elizabeth Jackson were recovered from the River Thames and several connected locations across London. She was approximately eight months pregnant. The evidence helped restore her name, but it did not establish how she died, where the fatal act occurred, or who was responsible.
The Woman the River Named is a historical true crime and narrative nonfiction account of an unsolved Victorian murder investigation. Following surviving inquest reporting, court records, archival material, contemporary newspaper coverage, documented historical research, and later examinations of the case, the book traces the path from discovery to identification, from police suspicion to coroner's verdict, and from public theory to evidentiary limit.
At the center of the book is not a solved mystery but a documented boundary. Clothing, witness recognition, physical marks, and a childhood scar remembered by family helped establish Elizabeth Jackson's identity. Yet the same record could not answer the questions a murder case most urgently demands. The investigation moved through police divisions, mortuaries, medical opinions, and jurisdictions, but no one was convicted of her murder.
The book also examines the theories that later gathered around the case, including the relationship between Jackson's death, the Thames Torso cases, Victorian London crime, and names raised by historical interpretation. It distinguishes confirmed fact from reported claim, allegation from conclusion, and speculation from proof.
