Where Proof Stops is a restrained historical true crime account of Betty Gail Brown's unresolved homicide on the Transylvania campus in Lexington, Kentucky, and the confession that appeared to offer an answer years later but did not produce legal closure.
Betty Gail Brown was nineteen, a student, and expected home after an evening study session. In the early hours after October 26, 1961, she was found dead in her car near Old Morrison. The case quickly moved from family alarm to public fear, from campus investigation to local memory, and then into the long uncertainty that defines many cold cases.
Years later, Alex Arnold Jr. confessed while jailed in Oregon. He was brought back to Kentucky, charged, and tried. But the confession carried problems: questions about reliability, disputed details, public knowledge of the case, and the distance between a dramatic statement and proof strong enough for conviction. The trial did not establish Arnold as Betty Gail Brown's killer, and the case remained publicly unresolved.
This book follows the known record with care: the study session, the timeline, the car, the first investigation, the spread of public details, Arnold's confession, the trial of doubt, later names, lost evidence, and the limits that still shape the case. It does not turn rumor into fact or uncertainty into accusation.
