One fatal shooting. Four trials. A legal ending that never resolved the room-or restored the victim to the center of the story.

On May 2, 1981, twenty-one-year-old Danny Lewis Hansford was fatally shot by Jim Williams inside Mercer House in Savannah, Georgia. Williams admitted firing the shots and maintained that he acted in self-defense. Prosecutors presented a different account, alleging that the physical scene had been altered. Two juries convicted Williams, both convictions were reversed because of trial errors, a third trial ended without a unanimous verdict, and a fourth jury acquitted him in May 1989.
