Theodosia Burr Alston boarded the Patriot in Georgetown, South Carolina, bound for New York after a year marked by grief, family separation, and wartime uncertainty. The vessel never arrived. No recovered wreck, body, autopsy, defendant, or court finding established what happened. The strongest supported explanation points toward storm-related maritime loss near the Carolina coast, but the final facts remain beyond reach.
Dorothy Harriet Camille Arnold disappeared from New York City after a daylight errand that should have left a clearer trail. She bought chocolates, visited a bookstore, spoke with an acquaintance, and then passed beyond reliable testimony. Her case became one of family privacy, public suspicion, newspaper attention, social pressure, and unanswered questions-but no body, crime scene, conviction, or legal finding resolved her fate.
Rather than turning uncertainty into a false answer, this narrative nonfiction account follows what can be known, what was reported, what was repeated, and what became folklore. Theodosia's story drew storms, pirates, wreckers, survival tales, and the disputed portrait legend. Dorothy's drew scandal, romance theories, family secrecy, suicide speculation, and public judgment. In both cases, the missing women became easier for others to interpret than to recover.
Written with restraint and attention to evidentiary limits, Where Certainty Stops is a careful investigation of disappearance, public memory, historical rumor, and the moral responsibility of telling unresolved stories. It does not name a killer where the record does not support one. It does not treat legend as proof. It follows the boundary between evidence and appetite.
