Between February 1976 and March 1977, Mark Douglas Stebbins, Jill Robinson, Kristine Mihelich, and Timothy King disappeared from communities in and around Oakland County, Michigan. Each child was later found dead. Their cases became linked in public memory under the label Oakland County Child Killer, yet no person has been charged with any of the four killings, and no trial has established who was responsible.
Four Children in Winter is a historical true crime investigation of the abductions, homicides, search effort, and decades-long cold case that followed. Rather than beginning with a suspect and forcing the record to fit, Daniel Hartsfield reconstructs the chronology from publicly accessible government reports, court opinions, official statements, credible reporting, archival interviews, and other traceable sources. The book separates confirmed facts from reported findings, allegations, interpretations, and speculation.
The investigation itself is part of the story. A regional task force processed thousands of tips, compared witnesses and vehicles across jurisdictions, developed behavioral assumptions, and built an archive large enough to require early computerized cross-referencing. Later decades brought renewed searches, public-record litigation, disputed suspect theories, mitochondrial DNA findings, questions about trace evidence, and repeated efforts by families to understand what investigators knew and why no prosecution followed.
The book also examines the limits of the surviving record. Search warrants do not establish guilt. A polygraph claim is not a verdict. A mitochondrial DNA association can narrow a maternal line without uniquely identifying one person. Public suspicion can become persuasive without becoming proof. Those distinctions matter in a case where people were investigated, named, excluded, or deprioritized without a murder charge ever being filed.
The narrative follows the case into renewed twenty-first-century review, including digitization of records and discussion of newer forensic and analytical methods. It also considers what decades of delay mean for evidence, witnesses, institutional memory, and the families who continued to seek an accountable answer.
