On December 3, 1957, seven-year-old Maria Elizabeth Ridulph disappeared while playing near Archie Place and Center Cross Street in Sycamore, Illinois. Her friend Kathy had briefly gone home for mittens. When she returned, Maria and the young man calling himself Johnny were gone. Nearly five months later, Maria's remains were found in woodland near Woodbine, but the recovery did not establish how she died or identify the person responsible.
6:57 follows the Maria Ridulph case from the snowy neighborhood corner through the first searches, the early investigative files, the decades of uncertainty, and the prosecution that eventually placed Jack D. McCullough at the center of the case. It examines the evidence that gave the State's story force: proximity, family suspicion, a photographic identification made more than fifty years after the disappearance, disputed statements, jailhouse testimony, and later forensic interpretation.
The legal record, however, carried a stubborn contradiction. At 6:57 p.m. on the night Maria vanished, telephone-company material placed a collect call associated with McCullough's former name in downtown Rockford, roughly forty miles from Sycamore. When the disappearance timeline was reconstructed, time and distance became more than background details. They became a physical barrier to the prosecution's account.
McCullough had been convicted in 2012 and sentenced to natural life. After renewed review, his conviction was vacated, he was released, the charge was dismissed, and he received a certificate of innocence. He is not legally established as Maria's offender. The original crime remains unresolved, and the identity of the man called Johnny remains unknown.
This narrative true crime account does not replace one failed certainty with another. It distinguishes documented fact from reported information, allegation, interpretation, and speculation while examining eyewitness memory, cold case investigation, forensic limits, courtroom procedure, public pressure, and the human consequences of wrongful conviction.
