In August 1892, Andrew Jackson Borden and Abby Durfee Gray Borden were found murdered inside their Fall River, Massachusetts home. Suspicion gathered around Lizzie Andrew Borden, Andrew's daughter and Abby's stepdaughter, but suspicion was not enough. Lizzie was indicted, tried, and acquitted. No person was convicted.
House of Locks is a restrained historical true crime account of the Borden murders, the Second Street household, and the legal case that followed. Rather than treating legend as proof, this narrative nonfiction book returns to the rooms, routines, witness accounts, evidence questions, courtroom arguments, and public memory that made the case one of America's most enduring unresolved crime stories.
The book follows the pressure points of the case with care: the divided family home, the deaths of Andrew and Abby, the timing of the morning, the missing weapon question, the burned dress, the barn account, the role of Bridget Sullivan and other witnesses, and the Commonwealth's attempt to build a circumstantial case around motive, opportunity, conduct, and contradiction.
At the center is the difference between what the public came to believe and what the law could prove. The prosecution argued toward guilt. The defense answered with absence: no direct witness, no confession, no confirmed murder weapon, and no conclusive blood evidence tying Lizzie to the killings. The verdict did not solve the murders, but it did define the legal boundary the legend has often ignored.
This is also a book about memory. The familiar rhyme simplified the case into a portable accusation, distorting Abby's role, the numbers, the weapon certainty, and the outcome of the trial. House of Locks moves back from folklore into the record, treating Andrew and Abby as victims before symbols and Lizzie as an acquitted defendant rather than a cultural verdict.
Written in an evidence-aware, historically grounded style, this account is for readers interested in true crime nonfiction, unsolved murder cases, legal history, Fall River history, and the lasting tension between evidence, suspicion, and public belief.
