A secret experiment is documented. A death nine days later is documented. What happened in the final interval is not.
On November 28, 1953, Frank Olson, a civilian U.S. Army scientist working in a classified environment at Fort Detrick, died after passing through a tenth-floor window at New York's Hotel Statler. Nine days earlier, during a government work gathering near Deep Creek Lake, CIA personnel had secretly administered LSD to Olson and other men without their prior knowledge. For more than two decades, Olson's family was not told that the experiment had preceded the psychological crisis that ended with his death.
A Death Under Secrecy reconstructs that history as narrative nonfiction, following the documented sequence from Olson's work around classified biological research and CIA cooperation to the Deep Creek experiment, his rapidly deteriorating condition, the government-connected effort to obtain treatment, and the final night in New York. It then follows the institutional response: what officials knew, what investigators and the family were not told, and how the case changed after MKULTRA became public.
Drawing on declassified government material, congressional investigations and testimony, presidential records, judicial opinions, public litigation documents, archival sources, and credible reporting, the book separates established fact from official account, allegation, interpretation, and speculation. The surviving record supports serious conclusions about unwitting human experimentation, failures of consent and safeguards, government secrecy, and destroyed records. It does not establish that Frank Olson was murdered, and no person was charged with killing him.
The investigation also places Olson's death inside the wider history of MKULTRA: covert behavioral research, secret drug testing, later psychiatric experiments connected to CIA funding, congressional scrutiny, presidential acknowledgment, compensation, and the long struggle of subjects and families seeking answers from incomplete files. Later forensic questions and litigation are examined for what they can support-and for what they cannot resolve.
At its center is a problem larger than one disputed death. What happens when the institution that controls the experiment also controls much of the record needed to understand its consequences? What can declassified documents clarify decades later, and what becomes impossible to reconstruct after records are withheld, destroyed, or never preserved?
Written in a restrained, evidence-aware investigative style, A Death Under Secrecy is a Cold War history of MKULTRA, Frank Olson, human experimentation, intelligence secrecy, and the limits of accountability. It does not ask uncertainty to do the work of proof. It follows the surviving record to the point where the record stops.
Read it for a careful reconstruction of what is known, what remains disputed, and why the difference still matters.
