On the night of December 30 to 31, 2000, Mikio Miyazawa, his wife Yasuko, and their children, eight-year-old Niina and six-year-old Rei, were killed inside their home in Kamisoshigaya, Setagaya, Tokyo. Investigators later identified an extraordinary range of material associated with an unknown male believed to have been inside the house: blood, fingerprints, footwear impressions, clothing, a knife, handkerchiefs, a worn hip bag, hair fragments, and other traces. Yet the public record still contains no legal name attached to that physical presence.
The Name They Expected follows the contradiction at the center of the Setagaya family murders: how can an investigation possess so much evidence and still lack an identified defendant? Beginning with the Miyazawas as a family rather than as entries in a case file, the book reconstructs the home, the changing neighborhood beside Soshigaya Park, the park-facing bathroom window investigators came to regard as a likely entry route, and the morning when ordinary family contact gave way to a homicide investigation.
From there, the focus turns to evidence and comparison. Blood and DNA could describe a biological profile but required a person or lawful comparison bridge to produce a name. Fingerprints could become decisive only if they matched someone. Clothing and consumer objects created trails through manufacturers, retailers, sizes, and sales histories, but a product trail was not the same as proof of ownership or guilt. The book also examines reported lineage findings with a deliberate boundary: ancestry information is not a passport, nationality, motive, or identity.
The investigation accumulated theories as well as evidence. Accounts involving robbery, access through the park, personal grievance, computer activity, and other long-repeated claims are tested against what the available record can actually carry. Where sources conflict, the conflict remains visible. Police conclusions are treated as investigative conclusions; reported findings are weighed according to their sourcing; allegations, interpretations, and speculation are not converted into certainty through repetition.
Written as restrained narrative nonfiction, the book avoids invented dialogue and unnecessary graphic detail, particularly where children and surviving relatives are concerned. Its attention stays on the difference between presence and identification, evidence and inference, and a case that has continued through decades of comparison without a publicly identified defendant. A timeline of events, key people glossary, and source index provide additional reference points for readers following the record.
