In May 1996, Julianne Julie Williams and Laura Lollie Winans were killed during a camping trip in Shenandoah National Park. Their murders prompted a vast investigation and eventually produced a federal capital prosecution against Darrell David Rice. But the case never reached a jury. Forensic evidence complicated the government's theory, and the murder charges were dismissed without prejudice in 2004.
No Verdict, Another Name follows what happened before, during, and after that collapse: the lives Julie and Lollie were building, their final trip, the search that led to their campsite, the development of Rice as a suspect, the government's bias-motive theory, the defense record, and the evidence that did not fit.
The book then turns to the years when the evidence outlasted the theory built around it. In 2021, a new federal investigative team began a methodical review. Preserved material was retested. According to federal authorities, a DNA profile generated from several evidence items produced a CODIS association with Walter Leo Jackson Sr.; investigators later compared the homicide evidence with a known buccal sample and said the result confirmed the identification. Jackson, however, had died in 2018. There could be no arrest, plea, homicide trial, or jury verdict.
That legal boundary is central. An indictment is not a conviction. Dismissal without prejudice is not an acquittal. And an investigative identification made after a suspect's death is not the same as a verdict reached after adversarial testing in court. The book keeps those distinctions visible while tracing how forensic science altered the official understanding of the case.
Built from public records, court material, official statements, credible reporting, interviews, and other traceable sources, this narrative nonfiction account separates confirmed fact from allegation, reported claim, official conclusion, and unresolved uncertainty. It does not invent private dialogue or reconstruct motives the record cannot support.
At its center are Julie and Lollie as people, not merely names in a true crime case. Their work, relationships, interests, and futures remain part of the story, even as the book examines the investigation that came to define them publicly.
