In September 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Extra-Strength pain-relief capsules contaminated with cyanide. The deaths triggered a nationwide warning, an unprecedented product recall, and a transformation in American consumer-safety packaging. But the central question was never answered:

Ordinary Poison reconstructs the 1982 Chicago cyanide poisonings through the public record, official accounts, court materials, credible reporting, and documented survivor statements. Beginning inside the homes of the victims, the book follows the first unexplained collapses, the medical professionals who recognized a deadly pattern, the laboratory discovery of cyanide, and the urgent effort to stop more people from taking the contaminated medicine.
The investigation quickly expanded beyond a series of medical emergencies. Medicine bottles became evidence. Store shelves became potential crime scenes. Investigators faced the difficult task of determining where the capsules had been altered, how the poisoned bottles had entered circulation, and whether the person responsible had selected particular victims or relied on chance.
A million-dollar extortion letter later introduced a possible suspect into the public story. Yet the conviction connected to that letter did not establish who contaminated the capsules or caused the seven deaths. No one has been charged, tried, or convicted for the poisonings themselves.
Rather than presenting theory as fact, Ordinary Poison separates documented evidence from allegation, interpretation, and speculation. It examines the physical evidence, the packaging vulnerabilities that existed in 1982, the investigative paths that developed, and the reasons certain theories continue to survive despite the absence of a murder conviction.
At the center of the book are Mary Kellerman, Adam Janus, Stanley Janus, Theresa Janus, Mary Reiner, Mary McFarland, and Paula Prince. Their lives are not treated as background to a famous corporate crisis. The narrative keeps its focus on the victims, their families, the people who recognized the danger, and the lasting human cost of a case that changed public behavior without delivering legal resolution.
