On November 17, 1978, Jayne Friedt, Ruth Ellen Shelton, Daniel Davis, and Mark Flemmonds vanished from a Burger Chef restaurant in Speedway, Indiana. Two days later, their bodies were found in Johnson County. No person has been publicly tried, convicted, or acquitted for their murders.
Four Names Before the Number is a restrained true crime cold case account of the Burger Chef murders, the damaged early investigation, and the evidence that never reached court. Rather than presenting a hidden solution, it follows the public record with care: what was confirmed, what was reported, what was alleged, what remains disputed, and what the legal system was never asked to prove.
The book begins where many case summaries do not-with the four victims before they became a case number. It then moves through the Speedway restaurant, the closing shift, the first scene, the missing car, the search that led south, and the wooded Johnson County road where the investigation changed forever.
Across witnesses, theories, investigative missteps, reported statements, lost opportunities, and decades of unresolved questions, this narrative nonfiction account examines how a case with evidence, suspects, public attention, and persistent law-enforcement belief still failed to become a courtroom case. It keeps the difference between suspicion and proof visible on every page.
