The Hill of Lead is a restrained historical true crime account of the Lead Masks Case, the unresolved 1966 deaths of Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz, two electronics technicians from Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil, whose bodies were found on Morro do Vintém in Niterói.
For decades, the case has been remembered through its strangest objects: crude lead masks, raincoats, a mineral-water bottle, technical papers, money, and a note with times, capsules, metals, a signal, and a mask. This book follows those details without allowing them to erase the men at the center of the case.
Moving from Campos to Niterói and from the final public errands to the hilltop scene, the narrative examines the known timeline, reported preparations, witness accounts, unusual experiments, the possible capsule sequence, failed toxicology, and the theories that formed in the absence of a confirmed cause of death.
The book does not claim to solve what the accessible record could not establish. It treats homicide, accident, poisoning, spiritual or technical experiment, outside instruction, robbery theories, UFO memory, and later rumor as questions to be weighed against the surviving evidence, not as conclusions to be forced.
At its core, this is an unsolved mystery nonfiction account about evidence, procedure, public fascination, and the human cost of uncertainty. The masks made the deaths famous, but the failed record left Miguel and Manoel's families with the harder burden: names, objects, papers, and no reliable final answer.
