This is the story of a man who did that for fifty years and never found out what came of it.
Ismail ibn Kathir was three years old when his father died. His mother carried him a hundred kilometres north to Damascus with a dead man's library, and he never lived anywhere else again. He memorised the Quran before his beard came. He sat twelve years at the feet of the most dangerous scholar of the age and helped wash his body when the state was finished with him. He buried a third of his city in one plague summer and kept the record of every name. He gave his eyes to fifty-five years of reading by lamplight, and when they were gone he went on working by ear, dictating to students who read to him from pages he could no longer see.
Nobody commissioned any of it. There was no patron, no salary for the writing, no audience waiting. He wrote a commentary on the Quran and a history of the world running from the creation to the end of time, because he thought somebody ought to.
He died blind, in a failing city, passed over for a post the year before, with an unfinished manuscript on the floor.
Six hundred and fifty years later his words are read on six continents in eighty languages, and the grave he asked for is underneath a road.
Words That Outlast Empires is a narrative biography, told as a story rather than a study. It is about devotion without applause, about work that goes on without you, and about what actually survives when everything solid has burned.
