Around the year 1600, that happened to one of the most original minds in the history of Islamic thought.
Sadr al-Din Muhammad Shirazi - known to history as Mulla Sadra - had trained under the greatest philosophers of Safavid Persia and was expected to inherit their place. Then came the accusations of dangerous innovation. His patrons withdrew. His colleagues crossed the courtyard to avoid his door. He walked out of the intellectual capital of the Muslim world to a village called Kahak, where there was no library, no school, and no one who had ever heard his name - and he stayed for roughly ten years.
What he found in that silence changed philosophy permanently. He came out of Kahak arguing that existence is not something a thing possesses but something it undergoes: that nothing in you is fixed, that the self is not a fortress losing ground but a river getting somewhere, and that the deepest transformations are the ones that cost the most.
This is a narrative biography - the story of a life, told as a story - that carries his philosophy inside it rather than lecturing it at you.
