She was the Prophet Muhammad's youngest wife, and when he died she became the single most important source we have for how he actually lived. More than two thousand of her narrations survive in the canonical collections. The senior companions, men who had fought at Badr, brought her the questions they could not settle among themselves. When they got something wrong she corrected them by name, in public, and the tradition wrote her corrections down and kept them for fourteen hundred years.
She did all of it from one small room, from behind a curtain, without pay, in the house where he was buried under the floor.
A Woman of Fire is the first narrative biography to tell her whole life at full human scale, built entirely from her own transmitted words. The girl who answered the Prophet with a joke about Solomon's winged horses. The fifteen-year-old accused before her whole community, who held her ground for a month and, when she was cleared, could not remember the name of the prophet she was quoting. The woman who rode into the worst mistake of her life, came home, said out loud that she had been wrong, and sat back down to work. The widow who wept at every meal for forty-six years and produced the most consulted body of knowledge of her generation in the same room where she wept.
