The friend who had Ibrahim Pasha executed - his closest companion of twenty years - and spent the rest of his life carrying what that cost. The father who summoned his most capable son Mustafa to a tent and ordered his death, and who could not, afterward, speak the name in public. The husband who wrote three thousand love poems to Hürrem Sultan - calling himself Muhibbi, the one who loves - because the poem was the only place where the most powerful man in the world was allowed to need someone.
Drawing on the Muhibbi divan, Ottoman archival sources, and the accounts of ambassadors who observed the court at firsthand, this book reconstructs not just the chronology of Suleiman's forty-six-year reign but the interior life of the man who lived it: the goldsmith who worked metal with his own hands to escape the demands of power, the poet who wrote honestly about loneliness from the most public throne in the world, the aging commander who mounted one last campaign at seventy-one because forward was the only direction that still made sense.
The most magnificent things a person can do - love without certainty, rule without coldness, grieve without explanations - are also the things that break them open. And being broken open is not the end of greatness. It is its truest form.
