This is the story of a man who did nothing else for seventy-six years.
Qusta ibn Luqa was born around the year 820 in a Lebanese valley where the largest temple the Romans ever built was being used to keep goats in. He was a Christian in a Muslim empire, a Greek speaker in an Arabic century, and one of the very few people alive who could think in three languages at once. He crossed a mountain range on his mother's savings to buy Greek manuscripts, carried them four hundred miles to Baghdad, and spent the rest of his life turning the medicine, geometry and astronomy of the ancient world into Arabic for readers who would never learn his name.
He lived through a ten-month siege. He watched the greatest scholar of his age destroyed by his own church. He was asked in writing, by a friend he loved, to give up his faith, and he said no, and kept the friend. He wrote the medical handbook by which Muslim pilgrims walked to a city he could never enter. He died at ninety-two in a stone house in Armenia with the snow against the door, still working.
There is one surviving sentence of praise about him. Even in that sentence, he is the second name.
Between Spirit and Soul is a narrative biography, told as a story rather than a survey, drawn from the documented record and honest about where that record runs out.
