Twelve hundred years ago, a woman in Basra stopped.
The tradition says Rabia al-Adawiyya was born into a poverty so complete there was no oil in the house on the night she arrived. That she was orphaned by famine, seized on a road, and sold, and spent some twenty years as another person's property. That when she was finally freed, in her thirties, with no husband, no family, no trade and no protector, she walked out into the desert alone and began the work that occupied the rest of her life: learning to love God for no reason at all.
What is certain is where she ended up. She taught. Among her students was Sufyan al-Thawri, one of the great jurists of the age, who came to her for rulings on how to worship. She refused the Amir of Basra, in writing, when he offered her a hundred thousand dinars. And she said four lines about hell and paradise that people have been repeating for twelve hundred years.
Love Without a Leash is a narrative biography of that life. It follows her from the unlit room where she was born to the small bare room where she died, through the years of slavery, the refusals, the night vigils, and the arguments she won by asking one quiet question. It is built from the documented record and from the accounts the tradition preserved, it is honest about which is which, and it tells her story the way you would tell it to someone you loved.
