He memorised the Quran at ten. He was healing a king at sixteen. And then he spent the rest of his life running.
There is a particular kind of person who cannot leave a question alone. Who is told, kindly and often, to settle down, to want less, to be content with what is already in front of them. Who has never once managed it.
Ibn Sina was that person, and it nearly destroyed him.
Known in Europe as Avicenna, he wrote a medical encyclopedia that taught physicians from Toledo to Samarkand for six hundred years. He described how disease passes between people eight centuries before anyone could see what he was describing. He set down rules for testing whether a drug actually works that a modern trial designer would recognise on sight. He argued that grief and terror and love are physical events with physical consequences, and he treated them accordingly.
He also refused a summons from the most powerful king of his age and fled across a desert to avoid him. He was imprisoned for four months in a hill fortress and wrote three books there from memory, with no library and no instruments. He lost his city, his patron, his father and his life's security inside a few years, and kept working.
This is that life, told as a story rather than a survey.
- Sit in a greengrocer's stall in Bukhara where a ten-year-old is learning arithmetic on a dust board
- Watch a teenage physician read a king's pulse while older men wait for him to fail
- Stand in a fortress cell where a man walks through a book he cannot open, checking it for gaps
- Follow the wrist of a dying boy while a servant recites street names until the pulse gives away a name
- Understand why a doctor in Padua in 1500 still had an eleventh-century book open on his desk
It is a book about medicine, and about faith and reason, and about what a mind can build when everything around it keeps collapsing.
Mostly it is about the hunger that would not let him rest, and what that hunger is actually for.
This is for anyone who has been told they think too much, want too much, or should have been satisfied by now.
The restlessness was never the flaw in him. It was the whole of him.
