Thabit ibn Qurra was born around 836 in Harran, a desert city that still worshipped the planets when the rest of the world had moved on. He grew up speaking Syriac, reading Greek, watching the sky the way his people had watched it for a thousand years. Then his own community tried him for heresy and pushed him out.
He walked to Baghdad. And there, at the greatest center of learning on earth, the exile did the work that saved a civilization's mathematics. He translated the complete works of Archimedes into Arabic - and because the Greek originals were later lost, much of what the world knows of Archimedes survives only in the words of a pagan refugee. He discovered a pair of numbers no one before him had found. He measured the length of the year to within two seconds of the value our atomic clocks give, working on cold rooftops across years of winters. He became royal astronomer to a caliph who walked with him in the garden at night and asked him about the stars, and he never converted.
This is a narrative biography, told as a story - the life of one of history's most essential and least known minds, from the temples of Harran to the House of Wisdom to a room full of manuscripts in three languages where an old man laid down his work.
