Somebody taught you something once. A parent, a teacher, someone who took you seriously before you had done anything to deserve it. Then they were gone, and you were holding it, and there was nowhere obvious to put it down.
In 859, a widow in Morocco faced exactly that question and answered it with a building.
Her name was Fatima al-Fihri. She had buried her husband and her father within a short span. She had inherited a merchant's fortune and, far more valuable, the education he had given her across twenty years of evenings. And she lived in a quarter of Fez crowded with exiles who had nowhere serious to study.
She spent the entire inheritance on a mosque that was also a school. Through the whole of the construction she fasted, because she did not want to taste the sweetness of the thing before it was finished. Then she sat down in the courtyard she had built and attended the lessons herself, as a student, into old age.
Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez has been teaching ever since. Not for a while, not with interruptions - without stopping, for eleven hundred years, through every dynasty and plague and empire that has passed through that valley. It is the oldest continuously operating university on earth, and for most of that time the world did not know her name.
This is narrative nonfiction, written for adults, and it is the first full-length account of her life for general readers - a real book, not a short inspirational volume or a children's story.
