Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani (1322-1390 CE) is one of history's great hidden figures - the medieval Islamic scholar whose commentaries on theology, rhetoric, and grammar shaped the education of millions across the Ottoman, Mughal, and Safavid empires for five centuries. Yet in the West, his name is virtually unknown.
The Last Light of the East tells the story of a mind that refused to be extinguished. Uprooted from his homeland, forced into the court of a conqueror, defeated in a legendary public debate by his greatest rival - Taftazani absorbed every blow and turned each one into deeper, more precise, more enduring work. When the historian Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani wrote his epitaph, he chose seven words: Science ended with him in the East.
