He was the poorest man in the room, and he is the reason we know what was said in it.
You have been the one nobody counted. In the meeting, on the team, in the family, doing the part that has no title attached to it while other people went off to the things that mattered. You know what it is to be in the room and not be in the minutes.
This is the life of Abu Hurayrah, told as a narrative biography built only from what was actually transmitted. He came out of the mountains of Daws with nothing, arrived in Medina after the fighting was over, and slept on a stone platform with seventy other men who did not own a cloth to put over their shoulders. He tied a stone against his belly to get through the night. He fell unconscious on the mosque floor from hunger, and men stepping over him put a foot on his neck, thinking he was mad. He had a little over four years beside the Prophet. From those four years came more transmitted reports than from any other Companion, and fourteen hundred years of argument about how that could possibly be true.
The book takes the argument seriously and gives it at full strength before answering it.
- Recognize the part of your own life you have been quietly embarrassed to have lived
- See what it actually costs to be the person in the room who is only listening
- Watch a man be accused, examined, and confirmed, by the people best placed to catch him
- Understand why a poor man had something that no farm and no market stall could buy
- Find the door standing open in a life that looked from the outside like nothing at all
Nothing in these pages is invented. Not one word is put in the mouth of the Prophet or of any of his Companions. Every sentence inside quotation marks was transmitted by somebody, and where the chain behind a report is broken or weak, you are told so on the page where you are reading it, in the moment it costs the most. What is left after that discipline is stranger, funnier and more painful than anything that could have been made up.
This is a book for anyone who has ever done the work that nobody wrote down.
He was poor, so he stayed. Everyone else had somewhere to be.
Open the first page. He has been waiting fourteen centuries for someone to sit down with him.
