Eight hundred years ago a man in Cairo believed exactly that. He believed the letters of the alphabet were living things, that the names of God carried distinct powers a person could learn to draw on, and that the universe had a hidden grammar anyone patient enough could learn to read. His name was Ahmad al-Buni, and the book he wrote became the most widely copied Arabic esoteric manuscript in history. Healers carried it across the Sahara by camel. Sufi masters studied it in Cairo. The Sun of Knowledge is a narrative retelling of al-Buni's life, thought and long afterlife, written for readers who have never opened a book on Islamic mysticism. It moves from the Algerian coast where he was born to the Cairo where he worked, through the science of letters and the theology of the divine names, into the fierce arguments his work provoked and the extraordinary journey it made across continents.
