Behind him, through every crack in a broken city, something enormous has begun to wake.
This is the true horror of it. The fog does not only hide the taking. It eats the grief. A city that cannot remember its dead cannot mourn them, cannot look for them, cannot even be angry. And while London sleeps under that mercy, the old dreaming thing beneath it grows bolder, reaching up through bombed churches and drowned wharves, learning that it no longer needs a smiling boy to bring it supper. It can open a door and take the meal itself.
Peter is a monster. He is also the first and oldest of its victims, a starving thing that was hollowed out and sent to do the hollowing. The Lost Boys are old men now, their childhoods stolen a year at a time, their minds cracked by a paradise that was always a mouth. To save the children of London, Wendy must decide what such creatures are owed, and what it will cost her to stand watch over a city that would rather forget she exists.
Even Captain Hook understood it before the end. He heard the ticking that Peter would not hear, the sound of time hunting them on an island where no child was ever meant to grow old. Hook is gone now. Wendy is the last one left who remembers what he learned, and what the island did to him for learning it.
