In Riga, buildings do not just collapse, they get revised.
Structural engineer Ilze Riekstiņs is hired to assess a condemned concrete block in Maskavas Forstate, a place the city wants erased and reborn as a glossy redevelopment called Riga Ascendant. She expects rot, water damage, bad rebar, the usual. Instead, she finds something beneath the foundation that should not exist, a design logic that behaves like an approval chain: one signature, one permit, one finished line, and the city starts completing itself in the wrong direction.
As planners push for speed and investors demand certainty, Ilze follows the trail into sealed archives, missing meetings, and an unfinished wing that was never meant to be finished. Līga Feldmane, a stubborn archivist with too many locked drawers and too few answers, warns her that the problem is not superstition. It is structure, and it is patient.
People begin disappearing cleanly. Records correct themselves. A man can become a bureaucratic blank overnight. The closer Ilze gets to the heart of the design, the more the design reaches back, trying to assign her a role inside its system.
This is architectural horror with teeth: a curse that does not haunt, it compiles.
