Her friend Mara does not believe in any of it, right up until the building teaches her. After that there are two women inside a salt line, one cat with a shrinking count, and a whole city of doors outside that none of them can trust.
Elara stops sleeping. She tapes plastic over the mirrors. She measures salt like medicine and learns which corners of her own home she can no longer cross after dark. Their world shrinks to a rug in the middle of the living room, and the nights start running longer than nights are supposed to run.
Salt slows it. Light irritates it. A silver cross still carries the weight of the boy who once wore it. None of it will matter if Elara turns the lock herself.
Then the thing stops asking and starts offering. It has a trade in mind, and it is a fair one by its own arithmetic. A soul is worth a great deal. A cat is carrying nine of something he might be persuaded to hand over.
