The closer the crossing comes, the harder the thing inside Elena pulls. It whispers to her in Ligaya's own voice, promising an end to fear and hunger if she will only let the seam finish tearing. The moon does not care what she wants, and the pact was never written to be broken.

When the storm finally breaks over Tondo and the black water of the wharves, Elena learns that the real horror was never the queen waiting at the gate. It is the quiet teeth left behind in her wake, a patient thing that learns to open mouths in the walls, that tastes grief like an invitation and remembers her name long after the moon has set.
