Then the first direct fracture appears: an official letter addressed not to Morgan Talbot, but to M. Naas. The wrong surname is tied to the right house, the right road, and a buried line of history Lucinda spent her final years tracing. As Morgan sorts the estate, the house begins answering back. Journals change. Ink seems to wake. The pole in the yard is no longer an artifact but a marker tied to names taken, changed, and pushed out of the record. Local man Jonah Shewish confirms what Morgan least wants to hear: the pole is not merely old. It is a grave marker still waiting to finish choosing.
What begins as an inheritance story becomes something colder and stranger, a confrontation with misnaming as violence, land as archive, and identity as something that can be rewritten by paper or restored by memory. The Crooked Names of Haida Gwaii is folkloric psychological horror about erased names, colonial record-making, and the terror of discovering that a place can remember you more truthfully than the life you thought was yours.
