Every dawn over Tenochtitlan is a debt repaid. Xihua is a farmer's daughter who wanted more than the fields could ever give her. Now she has it. As the high priest Tlacaelel dies at the foot of the great pyramid, he presses a searing mark into her palm, the sun god's own sign, and hands her a burden no one ever trained her to carry. The only road left runs straight through the places the living were never meant to walk. Xihua sets out with Cualli, a scout who trusts the edge of his blade far more than he trusts any god, and together they pass through a shrine door into the nine cold depths of Mictlan, climb a stair of fire toward the lord who hoards the last living flame, wade a swamp rotting from the inside out, and reach at last the Citadel of Eclipse, where the Smoking Mirror waits with the heart in his hands and a bargain already shaped for her.
A god like Tezcatlipoca does not simply destroy what stands against him. He takes it apart from the inside. He offers Xihua her sun back and names a price she will not understand until it is already gone. He has no use for her life or her blood. He wants her memory, drawn out of her piece by piece, until she can no longer picture the face of the mother she crossed the underworld to save.

Drawn from the cosmology of the Mexica, Heart of the Sun builds a world where the sun is a warrior who has to be fed, where the night is always waiting to win, and where the gods walk close enough to touch and cruel enough to want to. It is a descent story with teeth and a quiet reckoning with the price of faith, carried by one ordinary woman who keeps walking after everyone stronger than her has already turned back.
