Ten years ago, Jamie Voss broke down on a mountain road outside Dagger's Hollow, Virginia, found a payphone in the trees, and left his sister one last voicemail before something in the dark began copying the exact sound of his footsteps. By morning, Jamie was gone, and the town filed him away with its other disappearances.
Now his sister, journalist and podcaster Lydia Voss, drives into Dagger's Hollow chasing the case no one ever solved. What she finds is not a grieving town but a town under rules: keep quiet, wear the state-issued headphones after dusk, never answer if you hear something outside that sounds like you, and never go near the dead mill at night. The locals do not agree on explanations, but they agree on survival.
As Lydia records interviews, tests the town's silence, and digs into years of vanished residents, the pattern sharpens into something worse than folklore. The thing haunting Dagger's Hollow does not hunt with claws first. It listens. It studies. It learns the rhythm of a body, the texture of a voice, and the shape of grief, then gives them back wrong. With frightened local Cal Rooker, the worn-down women who still remember the old rules, and the black carcass of the mill at the center of everything, Lydia is forced into a final confrontation with a predator built from echo, mimicry, and attention itself. The Sound of Hollow Steps is Appalachian psychological horror about copied voices, inherited fear, and the terror of realizing that some silences are not empty. They are listening.
