The Encyclopédie follows an ordinary copyist - a glassblower's son - who arrives at a desk at seventeen, copying words he cannot yet understand, and one January night hides a banned volume under his coat and walks home through the Paris dark.

- Jaucourt wrote 17,000+ articles unpaid. He employed four secretaries at his own expense.
- The publisher secretly cut hundreds of articles. Diderot discovered this only after the volumes were bound and distributed.
The uncut arguments had already escaped into the city. No one knew how far they would travel.
History is not a sequence of dates. The coffee was bitter, kept warm over charcoal in small porcelain cups. The presses ran through the night; the ink came off on every hand that touched the sheets. The furnace burned from three in the morning, its orange light visible from the street below. They were curious about the same things we are curious about. They wrote something that is still asking us questions.
