Vermeer painted thirty-four known works. He died in debt in 1675, his wife blaming the war years for his collapse.
In 1665, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek looked through a hand-ground lens at a drop of canal water and saw living creatures no human had ever seen - creatures that had been there all along, in every cup of water anyone had ever lifted to their mouth across all of human history.
Baruch Spinoza - excommunicated, alone - was writing that the sacred was not above the world. It was the world. Every room. Every hand. Every letter. Every ordinary Tuesday.
The Dutch Golden Age ended in 1672. France invaded. The Grand Pensionary was torn apart by a mob in the street of The Hague. The world that made Vermeer was gone in a season.
The painting survived.
