China. The Warring States Period. 4th Century BC.
Seven states are consuming one another in wars that will kill millions. The Zhou dynasty - three centuries old - is contracting toward silence. In its capital, Luoyi, the most intense philosophical debate in human history is underway. And one keeper of records, in a low archive building, is writing something down. The bamboo slips on which he wrote were buried in a tomb around 300 BC. They were found in the earth of Hubei Province in 1993 - still legible.
The arguments about what the Tao Te Ching was written for have never stopped.
The Water and the Way asks what it would have meant to be inside that moment.
Not as a king. Not as a general. But as the ordinary young scholar - the administrative secretary who corrected a levy structure for eleven bushels of grain across a minor Han district, and one winter evening held a bamboo slip to the lamplight and read: the usefulness of a wheel comes from the empty space at its hub.
- What did the people of this age know that we have forgotten?
- What is the difference between a philosophy and a survival strategy - when the people who wrote it saw no difference at all?
- What does it mean to preserve an idea when the most powerful empire in the world is deciding which ideas are worth keeping?
The facts are extraordinary enough.
The Tao Te Ching contains exactly 81 chapters - nine times nine, numerologically significant in Chinese cosmology - in approximately 5,000 characters.
The Guodian manuscripts, found in a nobleman's tutor's tomb in 1993, predate 300 BC and differ significantly from the received text - shorter, differently ordered, less paradoxical in tone. A text still becoming what it would be.
The Warring States period produced the Hundred Schools of Thought - Confucian, Mohist, Legalist, Daoist - the most concentrated philosophical flowering any civilisation had yet achieved, conducted against the background of catastrophic military violence.
The state of Qin, using Legalist administrative reforms, would unify China by 221 BC - and collapse within a generation, precisely as the Tao Te Ching predicted it would.
The border official who asked Laozi to write the text before he rode west has no name in the historical record. Only the asking survives.
The porridge stall opens before dawn in the winter cold, the grey bowl warming both hands. The archive smells of dried bamboo, aged ink, and the particular dust of three centuries of record. The palace bells run their sequence at the close of the court day - and then, one morning, they do not ring.
They were curious about the same things we are curious about. They wrote something that is still asking us questions. This book is the attempt of one ordinary witness - a young man who understood things by carrying them - to answer.
For homeschooling families: You are already doing the most important thing - putting the story of humanity directly into your children's hands. The Beyond His Story We Stand series was written for you. Each book takes one moment in human history and makes it lived rather than memorised, felt rather than filed away. Not a textbook. Not a syllabus. A story your child will not want to put down - and that will leave them asking the questions that no curriculum can generate for them. The questions that only wonder produces.
The text survived. Not because it was powerful - because it was passed. Hand to hand, slip to slip, across two thousand three hundred years. Also from
