The facts are extraordinary enough. Sylvia Beach published Ulysses in 1922 with one thousand copies on handmade paper. No mainstream publisher in England or America would touch it. She received no royalties from the arrangement. She never complained. Thirty thousand people have slept in beds tucked among the bookshelves since 1951. Each one left a single page behind. George Whitman named his daughter Sylvia - after Sylvia Beach - and gave the child her predecessor's name as an inheritance and an instruction. The building was a monastery in the seventeenth century. The monks lit a lamp every evening so travelers on the river could see the door was open. The tradition has not stopped.
History is not a sequence of dates. It is the record of billions of lives lived forward through a present as urgent as your own. A woman unlocks a green door on a cold Paris morning. The smell of old paper and river damp fills a low-beamed room. Across the Seine, Notre-Dame holds the sky in its two hands. They were curious about the same things we are curious about. They kept the door open through occupation, internment, and everything a century could produce. This book is the attempt of two ordinary women - each named Sylvia, each carrying what the other left behind - to answer.
