The extraordinary facts:
- The painting was kept in the studio for months, revised repeatedly, its true purpose debated by scholars for centuries.
- Philip IV's face appears only as a mirror reflection - the king present as an absence.
- The Infanta would be sent to Vienna at age ten and die at twenty-one, having buried three of her four children.
- Two centuries after it was painted, the Alcázar caught fire; the canvas was cut from its frame and thrown from a window into the courtyard, its surface scarred by the fall.
- In the painting, a chamberlain stands in the far doorway. No other portrait of him survives anywhere in history. He exists only here.
- The mirror in the background reflects nothing the viewer can quite see.
History is not a sequence of dates.
It is billions of lives lived forward through a present as urgent as your own.
The Spanish court woke to bells and cold stone corridors. Women carried water and mended cloth. The king had not slept well in years. Everyone watched. Everyone was watched. In a small dusty room, a man asked another what the painter was making. Neither knew.
They witnessed something still asking us questions.
