Among them, largely unrecorded, were women. The Brehon Laws gave women the legal right to be warriors, to own property, to judge. The monks who later wrote the stories down left most of the women in the margins. The arguments about what those women did - and why they were erased - have never stopped.
The Banféinnà asks what it would have meant to be inside that moment. Not as a king. Not as a chieftain. But as the ordinary woman - the banféinnà - who ran the forest circuit alone in the cold before the household woke, and one November morning rode through a gate her father did not come to close. What did she know? What did she feel when she stood at the boundary between the living world and the one beside it? What is the difference between being erased and being forgotten - when the forest remembers everything?
The facts are extraordinary enough. Ailbhe Gruadbrecc, daughter of High King Cormac mac Airt, is one of the only named banféinnà in the Irish tradition. She rode with Fionn mac Cumhaill. She died within a year. Almost nothing else was written down. The Fianna's initiation required memorising twelve books of poetry before a single physical trial began. The Brehon Laws recognised female warriors, judges, and poets centuries before any other European legal tradition. The fulacht fiadh - the cooking-place of the wild deer - fed the Fianna across centuries. Hundreds of these ancient cooking sites survive in the Irish landscape today.
History is not a sequence of dates. It is the record of billions of lives lived forward through a present as urgent as your own. The fire in the hall at Tara. The ancient oaks of the Slieve Bloom closing the sky to green shadow. The silence of a forest that has decided to stop making sound. They were curious about the same things we are curious about. They kept the boundary and ran into the forest and did not always come back. This book is the attempt of one ordinary witness - a woman who understood things by moving through them - to answer.
