The Great Pyramid of Giza is the most precisely built large structure on earth. Its base is level to within two centimetres across 230 metres. Its sides align to true north within three arc minutes. Its internal shafts point at specific stars with an accuracy of fractions of a degree.
No mummy has ever been found inside it.
The arguments about what it was built for have never stopped.
The Architects of Heaven asks what it would have meant to be inside that moment.
Not as a pharaoh. Not as a priest. But as the ordinary man - the stonemason of the second course who set twenty-three thousand joints across twenty-three years, and one night pressed his palms flat against warm granite in a sealed chamber and felt something move through the stone that he had no language for.
What did the builders know?
What did they feel in their hands and their bones when the flood water rose into the subterranean passages and the granite walls began to vibrate at a frequency below sound and above silence?
What is the difference between a machine and a temple - when the people who built it saw no difference at all?
The facts are extraordinary enough.
The three pyramids of Giza replicate in their ground plan the precise arrangement of the three stars of Orion's Belt - including the slight offset of the smallest pyramid, corresponding exactly to the slight offset of Mintaka, the dimmest Belt star.
The southern shaft of the King's Chamber points directly at Alnitak, the brightest star in Orion's Belt.
The King's Chamber resonates at a specific acoustic frequency.
A large unknown void was detected above the Grand Gallery by muon tomography in 2017.
It has not yet been opened.
History is not a sequence of dates.
It is the record of billions of lives lived forward through a present that was, to each of them, as urgent and full of small irreplaceable moments as your own.
