A narrow Appalachian valley between ancient ridges, a culture three hundred years in the making. A woman who carries ninety-seven songs in her body - given to her before she could refuse them, passed from County Antrim to Appalachia across five generations. In July 1927, a recording machine arrives in a furniture warehouse on State Street, Bristol. In ten days, the direction in which the tradition travels changes forever. The arguments about what that recording did to the world it came from have never stopped.
The Address asks what it meant to be inside that moment - not as a recording executive, not as a famous singer, but as the ordinary mountain woman who held the old ballads in her body and one morning read a notice in a store window and understood that the world was about to ask something entirely new of her.

The facts are extraordinary enough.
The Bristol Sessions of July 1927 produced recordings that defined country music for a century. The American chestnut blight killed the great ridge forests within living memory - the people who grew up under them watched them die. The TVA's Norris Dam, completed 1936, flooded entire valleys. Families received government letters with flood-zone coordinates and dates. Florence Reece wrote Which Side Are You On on the back of a wall calendar in Harlan County, 1931, while armed deputies searched her house. WPA fieldworkers drove disc-cutting machines into the mountain hollers to record singers who had never been fifty miles from home. Those voices are still in the Library of Congress. Still playable.
Woodsmoke before dawn. A creek running low in the drought summer. A fiddle on its peg above a cold fireplace. A woman singing in the kitchen before anyone is awake - not for anyone, simply because the singing is what holds the world in place.
They were curious about the same things we are curious about. They sang something that is still asking us questions. This book is the attempt of one ordinary witness - a mountain woman who understood things by carrying them - to answer.
