This book is not where the series begins in time. No permission required earns its place as Book 2 because it is the philosophical reason every other book in the series exists - the question underneath every question, the story underneath every story.For almost all of history, children were taught at home. The school as we know it is younger than the steam engine.
This book does not carry you to one moment in history. It carries you to your own kitchen table.
Every country. Every century. Every kitchen.
I wrote it at ten o'clock at night, with a glass of something - the book I could not find on any shelf. Not a curriculum. Not a checklist. Not a forty-step plan with laminated cards. A book a child or a parent could read alone, and feel less alone.
A book that says the quiet thing out loud. A book with parables. A book with teeth.
Then it opens a door - into a long hall outside of time, where fourteen strangers wait at one oak table. Each comes from a different age and a different tradition. The teacher has vanished. The only note left behind reads: You already know everything you need. Teach each other.
There is a fifteenth chair at the head of the table. It is empty.

It has never been locked. Your hand on the handle was all that was ever required.
