- The Book of Kells contains 340 surviving folios of calf vellum. An estimated 185 calves died for it.
- The blue was long believed to be Afghan lapis lazuli. Twenty-first-century analysis has revealed it to be woad - grown in a monastery garden.
- The purples were not Mediterranean murex. They were lichen scraped from Atlantic cliffs.
- Every colour in the book is the colour of the island itself.
- The book was made in the shadow of the first Viking raids - Lindisfarne 793, Iona 795, 802, 806.
- On a feast-day morning in 806, sixty-eight monks were killed at Martyrs' Bay. The book survived.
- It has never been finished.
History is not a sequence of dates. It is the record of billions of lives lived forward through a present as urgent as your own.
