On 15 June 1904, the excursion steamer General Slocum left Manhattan carrying more than 1,300 passengers and crew. Most of the passengers were women and children from St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, travelling to their annual picnic on Long Island Sound.
Before the ship had cleared New York's crowded waterways, fire broke out below decks.
The General Slocum had passed federal inspection only six weeks earlier. Yet its fire hose burst, many life preservers failed, lifeboats could not be launched, and the crew had received little meaningful emergency training. As flames swept through the wooden superstructure, Captain William H. Van Schaick drove the burning vessel towards North Brother Island.
The disaster ultimately claimed 1,021 lives.
General Slocum reconstructs the excursion, the fire, the desperate rescue effort and the long process of identifying and burying the dead. It also examines the defective equipment, weak inspection system, command decisions and institutional failures that turned a shipboard emergency into one of the worst maritime disasters in American history.
Drawing on official investigations, court records, contemporary newspapers and published historical research, Gordon J. MacKenzie separates documented evidence from later legend. The result is both a human history of unbearable loss and an examination of how public safety fails when certificates and regulations are allowed to replace genuine preparation.
