THE REIGN OF TERROR is a gripping account of the French Revolution's darkest turn: the moment liberty, virtue, fear, and political violence came together beneath the shadow of the guillotine.
The French Revolution began with extraordinary hopes. It challenged monarchy, privilege, feudal rights, aristocratic power, and the old political order. It proclaimed citizenship, equality before the law, national sovereignty, and the rights of man. Yet within a few years, the same revolution was creating tribunals, policing speech, hunting enemies, purging factions, and sending men and women to death in the name of public safety.
At the centre of this story stands Maximilien Robespierre: lawyer, moral revolutionary, defender of virtue, and the most famous figure associated with the Terror. He did not begin as a simple tyrant. He rose from the language of justice, equality, suspicion, and republican purity. But as war, hunger, civil conflict, royal betrayal, factional struggle, and fear consumed France, virtue became inseparable from coercion.
This book follows the road from the old regime to the guillotine republic: the collapse of monarchy, the trial and execution of Louis XVI, the rise of Robespierre, the Committee of Public Safety, the Revolutionary Tribunal, the Law of Suspects, the Vendée, the sans-culottes, the fall of the Girondins, the executions of Hébert and Danton, the Great Terror, and Robespierre's own fall on 9 Thermidor.
Part of the Blood and Power Series, this book examines how a revolution launched in the name of liberty turned inward, and how fear became government when purity mattered more than mercy.
