Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth rightly hold their place in Australian history as the men who achieved the celebrated first crossing of the Blue Mountains. But proving that a route existed was only the beginning.
Governor Lachlan Macquarie needed to know what lay beyond the range, whether the country could sustain settlement, where roads could run and how the rapidly expanding colony might move inland. For that task he turned to surveyor and explorer George William Evans.
Evans retraced and extended the western route, explored the plains around Bathurst, investigated the Lachlan and other inland rivers, served alongside John Oxley and carried his surveying career into Van Diemen's Land. His reports helped transform uncertain country into the routes, maps and administrative knowledge upon which colonial expansion depended.
Yet surveying was never neutral. The country Evans measured and described was already Aboriginal country, known through systems of geography, movement and belonging that British officials frequently ignored. The same technical work that supported roads, settlement and economic opportunity also helped extend a colonial system of property and authority across Indigenous lands.
George Evans and the First Crossing of the Blue Mountains examines the practical man behind the maps and the consequences of the system he served. It is the story of exploration after the celebrated breakthrough, when discovery became survey, survey became government and lines on paper began reshaping the Australian continent.
