From the granite hills of nineteenth-century Vermont, Henry Clay Ide rose from teacher and small-town lawyer to diplomat and statesman, carrying his family with him into an extraordinary world of international politics, empire, royalty, writers, presidents, and social upheaval. The Ides of Vermont follows Henry and his remarkable family from New England to Samoa, the Philippines, Spain, Washington, New York, and Europe during the decades when the United States itself was moving from a largely domestic power onto the world stage. In Samoa, where Ide served first as Land Commissioner and later as Chief Justice, Robert Louis Stevenson and his family became close friends. In the Philippines, Ide rose to Secretary of Finance and Justice and Acting Governor-General. Later, as United States Minister to Spain, he and his daughters entered a diplomatic and social world populated by kings, politicians, writers, and some of the most recognizable personalities of the Gilded Age.
