THE MASSACRE OF THE JANISSARIES is a gripping account of the violent destruction of one of the Ottoman Empire's most famous and feared military institutions.
The Janissaries began as the elite soldiers of the sultan: disciplined servants of the imperial centre, trained for war, bound to the ruler, and central to Ottoman conquest. They fought in campaigns, guarded the palace, stood near the heart of power, and helped transform a frontier principality into one of history's great empires.
But institutions change. Over centuries, the Janissary corps became a political force, an urban power, a defender of privilege, and an obstacle to reform. They gained status, pay, barracks identity, commercial ties, religious associations, and influence over the throne itself. What had begun as loyal service became corporate power.
By the early nineteenth century, Sultan Mahmud II believed the empire could not survive unless the Janissaries were destroyed. Earlier reform had failed. Selim III's New Order had been crushed, and the corps had shown that it could depose rulers, intimidate ministers, and resist any military change that threatened its place.
In 1826, Mahmud acted. He announced a new military formation, the Janissaries rose, and the state answered with overwhelming force. Their barracks were attacked with cannon, survivors were hunted, the corps was abolished, and the name of the Janissary was erased from lawful public life. Ottoman memory called it the Auspicious Incident.
Part of the Blood and Power Series, this book examines how a military institution created to serve the state became powerful enough to threaten it, and how the state finally destroyed its own servants in the name of survival.
