On the night of 25 July 1956, the Italian liner Andrea Doria was approaching New York while the Swedish liner Stockholm steamed east. Both ships carried radar. Both bridge teams believed they understood the other's course. At 11:11 p.m., Stockholm's reinforced bow tore deep into Andrea Doria's starboard side.
The impact killed passengers in their cabins and opened the liner to the sea. A severe list made the port lifeboats unusable, leaving hundreds dependent on ships converging through the darkness. The rescue that followed saved 1,660 of the 1,706 people aboard Andrea Doria, but 46 people on the Italian liner and five members of Stockholm's crew died.
Andrea Doria: Collision, Fog, and the Modern Sea reconstructs the disaster from design and departure to collision, evacuation, hearings, and afterlife. It examines Italy's postwar flagship, the passengers and crews, the two competing radar pictures, the flooding and stability crisis, the return of Ile de France, and the unfinished legal contest that ended without a verdict.
This is not a courtroom judgment disguised as history. It is an evidence-based account of technology, interpretation, institutional culture, rescue, memory, and the narrow margin between confidence and catastrophe at sea.
