At 1:55 a.m. on 29 May 1914, the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Ireland entered fog on the lower St. Lawrence River. Minutes later, the Norwegian collier Storstad struck her starboard side. The liner rolled over and sank in about fourteen minutes. Of the 1,477 people aboard, 1,012 died.
